Living Streets Edinburgh Group: Manifesto for 2027 Council elections

Maintain the position that “walking and wheeling are top of the sustainable travel hierarchy” and adhere to this hierarchy in every respect: street design, traffic management, budgets, maintenance, management of city streets.

Introduce an immediate increase in the pavement maintenance budget of £500,000 and commit to spending at least 25% of future roads maintenance budgets on footways.*

Review pedestrian waiting and crossing times at all traffic lights in the city and invest in smart signals to enhance efficient, sustainable mobility for everyone.

Respect pedestrian space by actively managing pavements to keep them clear of obstructions like roadworks signs, bins, hedges, old railings and other clutter.

Adopt a fresh approach to active travel programmes. Move away from  grand expensive schemes designed by consultants, and instead focus on smaller schemes, delivered in-house, which prioritise road safety, accessibility, travel to school and access to public transport.

Deliver a new City Mobility Plan/Transport Strategy based on practical, achievable measures to reduce traffic and encourage sustainable travel.

  • The annual footway maintenance budget is currently £3.500 million, which is 19% of the total roads budget of £18.467 million.
